Speaking of The Golden Bubbles playing tonight, their new album is available to stream RIGHT FREAKING NOW (even though it doesn’t officially release until October 13th).
Yes, this album has skits.
Yes, this album will make you dance.
No, I don’t know what “golden bubbles” alludes to.
Yes, I’m pretty sure you can get an early copy of it tonight at the Kitty Cat Klub.

You’ve probably already heard about this - OMG internet cat videoz @ a museum LOL! But actually, even though everyone is talking about it and although I read about it in my hometown newspaper, there’s a lack of pretension about it that I can’t help but like. Cat videos are about laughing at something that is unapologetically stupid. BUT WE DON’T CARE - THEY’RE FUNNY! For example, my sister sent me this cat video last week and I laughed at it.
Cat videos are usually viewed solo because that’s the nature of the internet, but tonight you have the opportunity to embrace the silliness and enjoy some dumb videos outside with a bunch of other people. That’s pretty awesome.
Tonight at 9pm

The Tribe & Big Cats!, Minneapolis’ best up-and-coming rap group, is playing FOR FREE at Amsterdam Bar and Hall. It’s a Thursday night and it’s 21+ and it’s in St. Paul, so that’s probably why it’s free, but it’s still nuts. Get there and wild out. Opening: Vision The Kid
Tonight, 9pm
Amsterdam Bar and Hall

It’s the last Wednesday of the month, so Transmission (a weekly dance night featuring new wave, no wave, indie rock, British pop, garage, mod, punk, post-punk, synth-pop, electro, etc) is at the Varsity Theater FOR FREE.
The theme is “Pretty In Pink” - aka, John Hughes night. If you’ve ever seen Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or The Breakfast Club, you’ve seen a John Hughes movie. If you’re a complete noob, they’re a bunch of amazing teen movies made in the 80’s that feature even more amazing music. Just go watch them AND THEN GO DANCE!!!!!
Tonight (8/29), 9pm
Varsity Theater
1308 4th St SE Minneapolis

We’re a little late on this, but here is our SUPER UNCOMPLICATED guide to the Minnesota State Fair. We picked the best stuff so you don’t have to read through all that other garbage.

PRO TIPS:
-Buy the Blue Ribbon Bargain Book (before or at the fair). It actually saves you a butt ton of money.
-On Monday, Aug. 27, Wednesday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 3 all rides and games are reduced in price by one ticket. BOOM.
-Go to the Giant Sing Along (9am - 9pm every day) on the north end of the fairgrounds. It’s basically group karaoke. It’s the best thing ever.
-Check out Lasertainment’s Laser Hitz Show (9pm every night). It’s supposedly a “high-powered aerial laser show,” and with “hitz” in the title you know the music will be good (at the intersection of Cosgrove St. and Randall Ave.).
-The Eco Experience building has free bicycle maintenance demos every day from 12pm to 4pm.
-ROBOTS. EVERY DAY. High School kids compete against each other every day at 10am, 12pm, and 3pm at the Education Building.

THE BEST OF EACH DAY:
-Legit: Actually do this.
-Ridic: Not all of you will think this is as awesome as I do.

You’ll find Beth and me running around the fair today like crazy people with mouths full of Sweet Martha’s cookies.
HAVE FUN YOU GOONS.

Boom.
The Bikery is back and this time we have even more crazy deliciousness for you. Say hello to the Lockhart cookie! The Lockhart looks thin and tough, but is actually a big old softie. These cookies are…

YES, THAT Bret Michaels is playing tonight at The Pourhouse. Never been there? Well it just opened this summer and not very many people have been - but talk about a perfect opportunity.
BRET “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” MICHAELS.
BRET “Cry Tough” Michaels.
BRET “I’ll Never Give Up The 80’s” MICHAELS.
And what’s better than one of the most ridiculous musicians of all time playing in a relatively small venue? That it’s being billed as an “up close and personal acoustic appearance.” So it’s going to be like this:
Since this event is $50 a ticket (even though all proceeds going to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation) we don’t actually expect you to go, but we couldn’t NOT tell you about this.
Show starts at 4PM, but he is playing as a part of the “Breathe Easy II Music Festival” (whatever that means) so there are 9 acts playing before him.

One of the last block parties of the summer is today and it’s rain or shine, so despite the chance of a downpour you should just get out there and suck it up! SUMMER! BLOCK PARTY! In the cold winter months you’ll regret not going. And it’s the very first time this block party is happening, so you’ll be super hip if you go.

6:15-7:00 Motel California

Have you heard of Dawes yet? Go ahead and listen to this song and then go find the entire album:
Perfect for sitting on the grass and enjoying some down time at the Great Minnesota Get Together. Honestly, who doesn’t love the State Fair? Greasy food, weird people, fat animals, rides, etc, etc… it’s the best. Especially when they bring in great music like this for you to chill out to.
The best part? They’ll be there not once but TWICE! Take your pick:
Thursday, August 23 at 8:30pm or Friday, August 24 at 8:30pm at the Leinie Lodge Bandshell on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. It’s free once you’re in the fair and open to all ages. See you there.

It’s Hump Day. It’s gorgeous outside. And Mill City Live is happening!
The Roe Family Singers are playing the third Wednesday of Mill City Live, a series of outdoor concerts at the Mill City Museum. It’s just $5, and music is from 6-8pm but you can get into the museum for FREE from 4-9pm with your ticket (it’s usually$11!).
So yeah, for 5 bucks you get to sit outside in a sweet courtyard and listen to good music and explore a crazy museum. Donzo.

Zoo Animal only has TWO MORE LOCAL SHOWS IN 2012. Yes, that means this show I’m about to tell you about and ONLY ONE MORE. So if you know anything about anything, you should get your tickets to this show right now.
This Sunday (8/19), Zoo Animal is playing at “The Cake Shop,” a semi-secret location that will be given to you when you buy tickets. Usually the band consists of Holly Newsom (vocals & guitar) + bass + drums, but for this show the lineup is going to be her + Grant Cutler (adding another guitar and bonus vocals). Throw those two amazing musicians five feet away from you in a living room and we’ve got ourselves a show that you’ll tell your friends about for months.
What you need to know:
-There are two shows: Sunday, August 19th at 4:30pm & 7pm
-Each show is $15, which seems like a lot for a house show, but all the money goes to Holly and Grant.
-This is in a house, so space is SUPER LIMITED.
-All of the information on buying tickets is here: Zoo Animal with Holly Newsom & Grant Cutler at the Cake Shop
-I’m out of town and super depressed I can’t be there.
- Alex

Hey remember when I told you about Mill City Live? Well, it’s Wednesday, which means that it’s happening all over again tonight! This time The Melismatics are playing. Boom.
Basics: For only $5 you get entrance to the Mill City Museum from 4-9pm (it’s usually $11) AND get to sit in their sweet Ruins Courtyard and listen to some good music. Sounds pretty awesome to me.

If you live in Minneapolis, you know Poliça. If you don’t, don’t tell anyone. Just go look them up right now and become obsessed like everyone else (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4hYT-mYzI4). Because, honestly, if you don’t like Poliça there is something wrong with you, or you’re just acting too cool.
They are playing a show at the Cabooze Outdoor Plaza TOMORROW with Zoo Animal, one of our favorite bands EVER, and Supreme Cuts. JUST THINK: two of the best bands to come out of Minneapolis in the last 10 years at an outdoor show on a warm summer day. What more could you want?

Everyone knows MTV sucks now, but Transmission is bringing back the days when MTV still played music videos. I guess they still sometimes play them, but we don’t count Nicki Minaj as music.
Transmission is the forever popular Wednesday dance night at Clubhouse Jager, but this time they’re bringing the party to the First Ave mainroom, again. And when that happens, you know it’s going to be good.
DJ Jake Rudh will be spinning straight from music videos projected on the big screen all night. Expect 80’s new wave for most of the time, with special top 40, hair band, late 80’s/early 90’s dance, R&B, and hip-hop hits from the time mixed in. It’s the best dance music of all time for anyone who has ever wanted to dance, so…everyone.

Nona Marie (of Dark Dark Dark) and her backing 12-woman choir have done the impossible - make choral music cool. Come check them out tonight doing originals and covers (everything from crowd-pleasers to songs that no one knows even though that one guy pretends like he obviously knows it) as well as Tiny Fantasy who opens.

Do you know about Mill City Live? It’s this awesome concert series at the Mill City Museum. A local band will play in the Ruin Courtyard every Wednesday in August for just $5 - museum admission included! Admission is usually $11 and doesn’t include outdoor music, sooo this is a sweet deal.
The series kicks off tonight with local bluesy/jazzy act Davina and the Vagabonds. Good music + a museum in a factory that exploded + outdoors + only $5? Done deal. Go.

Music 6-8pm

Jason Segel + The Muppets + Musical Numbers + Gratuitous Cameos = This amazing movie. It’s ridiculous and will make you laugh really hard if you embrace the goofiness. You will have an opportunity to do so TONIGHT because it’s playing at a park for free!
There will probably be little kids there, which is awesome, because little kids laugh at the stupidest jokes. Bring a blanket and bug spray and enjoy.

Movie starts after sunset.

THIS:
AND THIS:
I am freaking out. I’ve been obsessed with Potter Puppet Pals forever so I’d be excited to see the live show anyway, but now Hot Freaks is playing?!? Oh my head!! Some other band is playing too but who even cares.
I’m super bummed that I can’t go to this, so you all have to go for me and report back. And you have to dress up and pretend like you’re wizards and just have a good time because when else do you have an opportunity to nerd out AND dance to good music? Basically never.

Tallest man on earth - These Days (Nico Cover) - A Take Away Show from La Blogotheque on Vimeo.
The Tallest Man On Earth is this guy Kristian Matsson from Sweden but he plays folk music like he was born in a mystical town in the Old West. He is one of my favorite songwriters living right now, possibly of all time. I wish this show was in a more intimate venue, but this is still not a show you want to miss.

If you’re awake, go to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden RIGHT NOW. Today from 10am to 3pm Walker Open Field is bringing a little LARPing (live action role playing) to the sculpture garden - and it’s going to be ridiculously awesome.
Even though it’s one of the nerdier things you can take part in, we’re talking about Walker Open Field - a place for imagination where people come together to learn about new things, share ideas, and play together. And tell me this doesn’t sound like fun:
“Haggle with a shopkeeper in the marketplace, wield a sword at the battle school, cast spells with a witch, and liberate friends and revelers captured by the troll during this day of epic outdoor adventures.”
Exactly.
Here are some of the characters you’ll run into in the garden with a few hints at the challenges you’ll face:

If you’re still feeling iffy about it, grab a little brother or sister to bring with so you can pretend like you’re going for them.
Free!
All ages!
Bonus: Walker admission is free from 10am - 5pm, since it is the first Saturday of the month.

The 3rd Annual Totally Gross National Party is September 9th!
Put on by Totally Gross National Product, Minneapolis’ most legit independent record label with bands like Poliça, Marijuana Deathsquads, Spyder Baybie Raw Dog and 2% Muck, and Slapping Purses.
Lineup TBA.
Save the date.

“If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 88 miles per hour… you’re gonna see some serious shit.”
“Lou, give me a milk. …..Chocolate.”
Yep, it’s happening. Back to the Future is playing tonight at Powderhorn Park. This movie is frickin’ awesome. It’s set in the 1985 AND 1955, features Marty McFly, time travel, the Delorean, near-incest, a bad guy named Biff, and killer special effects. Perfection.

The new P.O.S. album “We Don’t Even Live Here” is, hopefully, coming out September 18th and everyone in Minneapolis, and well beyond, is freaking their buttholes about it. This album is going to be the best thing ever, and if you’ve seen P.O.S. or Doomtree in the last couple years you have definitely heard some tracks off it - songs like Fuck Your Stuff and Get Down.
WELL GUESS WHAT? YOU (Yes, YOU!) can be in the music video for “Get Down” - you just have to be as out of control as the song:
Actual details:
-Open auditions: Monday, August 6th 5:00pm - 10:00pm (first come first serve, no appointments)
-Call backs: August 7th
-Music video shoot: August 17th and 18th
Audition Location: 505 1st Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN
Shooting Location: Minneapolis, MN
What they want you to know about the casting: Looking for creative looking models, dancers and civilians of all types! Ages 18-40, or older if you can bring the angst! Be ready to dance even if you are not a great dancer, we just want to see you move. We are looking for different types of fashion and attitude, so come prepared. Think of a dance party you want to make heads move, away from normal “clubbing” outwear is encouraged, be BOLD!
My advice:
-don’t wear cargo shorts
-don’t be “BOLD!”, be OUT OF CONTROL
-don’t be shy, if you can’t dance just flail your arms and jump around
